Cluj Never Sleeps
* The schedule of the shortest night of the year has extended: Cluj Never Sleeps will start on Saturday, 20th of June, with a BEACH PARTY.
* Theatre, jazz and a spectacular classical music recital and visual effects are part of the proposals for the 2015 edition.
Cluj Never Sleeps and the Day 15 team, from the SHARE Federation from Cluj-Napoca, have united their forces for the biggest BEACH PARTY ever seen in history of Cluj: Day 15 Beach Party. Saturday, the 20th of June, from 10 am, lasting until 10 pm, the Grigorescu beach will host concerts, sport activities, boardgames and a lot more.
The headliner will be Elena Mîndru, who has specially prepared a performance for this event - Jazz Never Sleeps with Elena Mîndru Finnection, in which Elena will be accompanied by an acoustic jazz quartet formed from finnish musicians. Together, they invite us in an exotic musical trip, containing a repertory that brings together elements of romanian traditional music and jazz rhythms. In May 2014, the five artists have won the Young Nordic Jazz Comets Finland competition, and their album was awarded with the “CD of the year” title at the Jazz Awards Gala 2015.
Throughout the evening, a premiere will take place. At 10 pm, in Unirii Square, The National Theatre of Cluj Napoca will present its first outdoor play, “Extraterrestrial Clowns”. The script and administration are established by Eli Simon (SUA), and we will be offered the chance to see, on stage, the romanian artist Ada Milea, which is one of the main characters. However, who are the extraterrestrial clowns? Foreigners and unwanted, lovely and naive, clumsy and sheepish, they are forced to leave behind their planet. They will arrive on Earth, where they will try to adapt to the new life conditions, integrate in the human society and assimilate our customs, traditions and daily behaviour… although not always in a successful way!
A classical music play and, in the same time, a concert, will be one of the of the most breath-taking moments from Cluj Never Sleeps. It will be accompanied by visual and electro-acoustic effects, created solely for the purpose of this event. “The wheel of fire”, directed by Andreea Iacob, is a perfect opportunity to listen to Iulia Merca (voice), together with Mira Gavriș (piano). The sounds will be transformed into electronic effects by József Iszlai and transposed into visual illustrations by Lamaskier [thempill.com]. The concert will start at 11:30 pm, in the backyard of the French Institute of Cluj-Napoca.
The State Hungarian Theatre will bring at Cluj Never Sleeps the Breaking the waves show, beginning at 8 pm at Sala Studio. The event consists of a scenical version created by Sándor Guelmino and Györgyi Gecsényi, inspired by the famous film bearing the same name, directed by Lars Von Trier. Tom Dugdale is responsible with the movie administration.
Starting with 10 pm, the citizens are able to discover what being an actor actually means, at “Livingroom no 9”, a new debate from the series initiated by the actor Balázs Bodolai with the purpose of bonding the audience and the backstage of the acting world. This time, Anikó Pethő is invited to answer series of questions. The discussion will take place in hungarian, on the bank of the river Someș, near the entrance of Sala Studio.
At midnight, The State Hungarian Theatre is inviting us to Loose Neckties Society’s concert, formed mostly by actors of the theatre, containing a repertory which spreads from versions of Gnarls Barkley’s Crazy until the hit I Follow Rivers. The eclectic style, the method of presentation, the unique instrumentation certainly promise a great party each time. Albert András (drums), Balla Szabolcs (saxophone, voice, bass), Farkas Loránd (voice, bass), Szép András (keyboard), Viola Gábor (guitar) will perform. The concert will take place in the backyard of the theatre.
All of these events are just some of the dozens of surprises prepared for you in the 20th and 21st of June. Cluj Never Sleeps is conceived as a white night and it is meant to point out the cultural activities to the general public, by exposing them in public spaces and/or unconventional spaces. In addition, at the basis of this project stands the fact that this city is unique through diversity, multiculturality, the handful of cultural activities and ways to spend your free time. The Cluj Never Sleeps project is coordinated by the SHARE Federation Cluj-Napoca and it is one of the strategical projects of the Cluj Napoca European Youth Capital 2015 program.
